Marrying your pets; are you barking mad?

Marriage between a human and their pet is becoming more and more heard ofYou know the saying, 'a dog is a man's best friend' but have you ever heard the saying 'dog is a man's
spouse?' No? Well you have now.

Pets are known to be great company for us and many of us create special bonds with our pets, feeling like they are one of the family. Yet this has now been taken a step further with some people believing their pets are 'the one' and tying the knot with them. Some of you must be thinking this can't be serious, but trust me, we're not horsing around!

Today ITV'S This Morning featured an interview with newlyweds Amanda Rogers' and Sheba... her dog. The service took place in Croatia, with 200 people in attendance. Phillip Schofield held back his laughter whilst Amanda Rogers' declared her love for her dog; "my love for Sheba is very deep. We have a deep connection."
This bizarre relationship sparked a lot of comments from viewers on twitter with one user asking the question, "Have I woken up on a different planet?"

Over the years people marrying their pets has become increasingly more heard of, some other instances are:
  • In 1998 The Jerry Springer Show featured a shocking episode with a man who married his horse
  • 2006 - A British woman, living in Israel married a male bottle-nosed dolphin called Cindy
  • In 2013 fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld announced that he wished to marry his cat Choupette
This leads us to ask the question; why are more people choosing to marry an animal over another human being? One obvious answer is they may not be getting enough human attention or they simply have had bad relationships/experiences in the past. Also there are aspects that would make your pet a great spouse:
  1. They make great company
  2. They don't talk back
  3. Let you watch the programmes you want to
  4. Always happy to see you
  5. Don't moan
These do sound great but marrying your pet is still unusual nonetheless, something most of us will never get used to hearing about.

What are your thoughts, is marrying your pet bizarre? Would you marry your pet?
